a doctor tries to practice what she preaches to lose weight

Diet Confusion!

I guess if I was losing 1-2 lbs a weeks it I wouldn’t look into all these crazy diets. BF (before 40) I could lose weight. Not a problem I just couldn’t keep it off. I’m not mad that I’m not losing like before. I have made progress and trying to make life long changes. I also want to be healthy ,not just slimmer. This is where the confusion comes in. You got your vegan, raw,gluten-free, clean eating , primal,no grain people, what the heck am I supposed to eat? I’M NOT SAYING ANY OF THESE ARE WRONG!  I’m just puzzled. I thought whole grains were healthy now Dr Mercola says no grains except fruit and veggies. The Health Hound says all fruits and veggies are ok but eat grains only after a work out. I’m a doctor and I’m confused.  The Primal/Paleo sounds like Atkins. Did caveman live long enough to be healthy? The more I look at different diets the more I feel frustrated. I don’t know what works the best for me. It ‘s really trial and error and I have to do what makes sense to me. For now I will increase my veggies, continue to eat my fruit, and choose lean proteins and whole grains. You can’t go wrong with that or can you? I would love to hear what works for you.

  1. Grains are great for you Doc… see this http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=btnews&dbid=41… and this http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=btnews&dbid=104 . and this http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=george&dbid=193 ..the problem comes when we are either allergic (me) or are losing weight(me)…. register with http://www.livestrong.com…. it is the best tool i have found for tracking calories to either gain or lose weight….

  2. FHI….www.livestrong.com is helping me lose a half pound a day………it has helped me time my 6 meals a day….i have now lost 34 pounds in 10 weeks…12 lbs to go for ideal BMI……i was a body builder turned fat boy…

  3. sorry, last thing and i will leave you alone…..there is only one way to diet, the rest are just fads. it is simple—– consume less calories then you burn. There are tools to help you get there but, you still have to know how many calories you eat/burn everyday.

this sounds smart to me. though a few months back i really wanted to drop about 15 pounds fast. i was very frustrated so i did the hcg diet for 21 days. now i maintain. i have info on that if you are interested. it worked like a charm but i lived like a monk for 21 days…..

  5. The average American eats to much meat. How much are you eating? The average American also doesn’t eat enough fruits and veggies. Are you getting enough? If you have a junk food or splurge you love, don’t get rid of it. But don’t keep them all. Find little ways to cut your fat and sugar intake. Switch to 1% milk, use a little less butter, try fat-free yogurt.
And this is really, really, helpful if you can stay on track and put in your info as accurately and frequently as possible. http://www.mypyramidtracker.gov/. It’s a government website designed to help you track and analyze your diet. It will show you your trends over time and break everything down into individual nutrients. Best of luck to you! (p.s. how much are you trying to lose?)

  6. It does really come down to figuring out what works for you.
As for me, I think smaller, more frequent meals containing lean protein, veggies and my main carbs being oats, red potatoes or brown rice works for me… especially when I get in daily exercise. Add in a once a week night with Ben & Jerry’s, and I’m golden (my body rewards me for high calorie influx with anywhere from a 2-4 lb drop in weight the next morning… this still creates confusion in my life and creates the situation of me having that only once a week, but attempting to not have/want it *every* day).
