I will say time and time again calories count. The new catch phrase is whole grains. Several times this week I heard “I eat whole grains. Why aren’t I losing weight ?” I will admit its good to eat whole grains. You still have to be conscious with your calories. If your eating too many calories your not going to lose weight. Whole grains are not a fat burner. I’ve lost weight before and my downfall is latching on to something I can’t keep up or making my diet so restrictive I give up. Not this time. I’m making permanent changes. I now prefer brown rice to white. Quinoa to mashed potatoes but I do know in the end calories count. Don’t let a diet myth stop you in your tracks!

It’s ok to indulge once in a while. I just make sure it’s worth it. I took my husband out to lunch for his birthday it was definitely worth it. We went to Underdog Wine Bar in Livermore,CA. It’s on the grounds of Concannon Winery. They serve small plates and wine flights. My kind of place. I love being able to taste things and not eat a lot. I had crab cakes on salad greens and a Pinot Grigio flight ( Three two oz servings ). I topped it off with a port and dark chocolate tart. It’s finally cool enough to sit outside. I loved it. Such a great date. Happy Birthday Honey.
Work drives me crazy for many reasons. One of the main reasons is food. OMG! You would think it is a health maintenance organization we eat healthy. Not always the case. Lets start with cinnamon buns in the break room this morning. Lunch ,Mr Pickles sandwiches and potato chips. This is the average lunch provided for us during meetings. I forgot the cookies. Afternoon snacks were brownies provided by nurse. Did I mention candy bars by the dollar? We have several candy boxes floating around for school fund-raisers. How can I stay healthy around this? This was just today. I haven’t started on pot luck and pizza parties for meeting goals. It’s not easy. I have learned to say no,thank you. I bring my lunch and my snacks. We do have fruit sometimes but they put salt on it!! The patients bring gigantic coffee concoctions. Help me! I just keep saying no but some days its hard.
Is this a food blog or a weight loss blog? It’s hard to say. This is one of my problems . I love to eat! I love to travel . How to do that ,work, lose weight and be a mom is challenging. I took my daughter on our annual summer weekend trip to “The City“. This is the nickname for San Francisco. We live in the burbs about an hour away. This is my second time in a week going to The City to eat. On our mother-daughter trip we spend the night and do tourist stuff. We ride the metro to get around. My husband is from the area and doesn’t find this exciting. We do walk a lot which is great. This trip we did Fisherman Wharf and North Beach. I tortured my child by taking her to The Stinking Rose. She thinks it stinks! I love it! I’m a garlic fanatic. It’s still oozing out of my pores 2 days later. The motto is we season our garlic with food. I ordered Zuppa di Pesce. It’s a tomato based seafood stew. It was awesome. I did break my dairy rule and have a cannoli but we walked two miles to and from the restaurant. I think that was a good trade-off. I know I’d walk more if I lived in a major city. Mmm that’s an idea. If your a foodie San Francisco is the best.
It amazes me how people constantly eat junk and then wonder why they feel like crap. As a pediatrician I see teenagers who do not eat healthy. They don’t eat breakfast and wonder why they have headaches in the middle of school. They eat junk and wonder why they gain weight and get constipated. Don’t drink water and wonder why they are dizzy. I was a teenager once but I never skipped meals. My problem was what I ate. I ate veggies but it was the pizza puffs for lunch and McDonald’s after school that was the problem. Mind you I don’t hear from these kids most of the summer. School starts Monday and this is when the problems will start. I tell kids make your lunch. “my mom never buy’s anything I like” is the usual response or I don’t like vegetables, They walk in the office with Gatorade‘s and Starbucks in hand. Don’t tell me to talk to the parents. They have even more excuses. They have too much homework to exercise. I buy healthy stuff they won’t eat it. I have information sheets, links to podcast and nutrition videos. I think it goes in one ear and out the other. Last year I asked my patients to bring me pictures of them exercising. I included pictures of me doing the same. I call it my thrive board. It’s great. People tell me friends tell them “I saw you on the wall at the doctor”s office”. This year I’m changing it up. I think I’ll put up pictures of children eating healthy food. I’ll start with my staff. Maybe it will catch on!

I love to share my favorite new foods. Amazing meal by Amazing grass is my new crave. The chocolate infusion feeds my chocolate addiction in a healthy way. For my morning snack at work I mix this with almond milk. It’s great for my post workout meal/ night snack. I’ll add a banana and peanut butter. It fits right into my gluten/ dairy free trial. I know I probably sound like an advertisement but I love new foods. I usually prefer my fruits and veggies fresh but this is a great way to get in an extra serving or two a day. Like the commercials used to say ” try it you’ll like it”.

I’m thinking of trying dairy and gluten-free. Since I’ve been back from my vacation I have this gas bloating feeling. These symptoms are not new. I just thought it was milk. I know I’m lactose intolerant so I usually try to avoid cheese except feta and I stick to Greek yogurt but not very strict about it. The diet plans I’ve read made me think more about the gluten thing. I have joint pain (but only in weight-bearing areas knees, hips , ankles) gas , bloating, and fatigue. These are all vague symptoms which can be caused by many things. I think the dairy , gluten-free challenge might be worth a try. If it doesn’t help I’ll gradually add back. I don’t believe in restricting food groups. A good challenge should last two weeks. This doesn’t mean I’m going to buy gluten-free stuff. There are lots of gluten-free food that’s healthy. Fruits, veggies, quinoa, brown rice. I already eat these things so not a problem. I’ve got some planning to do so I won’t start until next week. Anybody on dairy or gluten-free diet.?

I guess if I was losing 1-2 lbs a weeks it I wouldn’t look into all these crazy diets. BF (before 40) I could lose weight. Not a problem I just couldn’t keep it off. I’m not mad that I’m not losing like before. I have made progress and trying to make life long changes. I also want to be healthy ,not just slimmer. This is where the confusion comes in. You got your vegan, raw,gluten-free, clean eating , primal,no grain people, what the heck am I supposed to eat? I’M NOT SAYING ANY OF THESE ARE WRONG! I’m just puzzled. I thought whole grains were healthy now Dr Mercola says no grains except fruit and veggies. The Health Hound says all fruits and veggies are ok but eat grains only after a work out. I’m a doctor and I’m confused. The Primal/Paleo sounds like Atkins. Did caveman live long enough to be healthy? The more I look at different diets the more I feel frustrated. I don’t know what works the best for me. It ‘s really trial and error and I have to do what makes sense to me. For now I will increase my veggies, continue to eat my fruit, and choose lean proteins and whole grains. You can’t go wrong with that or can you? I would love to hear what works for you.
