Poached Figs Anyone?

I love fresh figs. My friend down the street has fig trees on her ranch. She introduced me to fresh figs a few years ago. Prior to that the closest I’d come to a fig was a newton. I looked up fig recipes because I got a lot of them this year. I was feeling a healthy dessert last night. I found poached figs in wine. I used a Shiraz. This was awesome. I combined wine, honey and cinnamon with a hint of red pepper flakes in medium-sized saucepan and bring to a simmer, then reduce heat. Add figs and poach until soft about 15 minutes. Remove figs and reduce sauce to a syrup consistency. I added a few dark chocolate chips and almonds. It’s kind of my grown up trail mix. I will be making this more often. Mmm!

Diet Confusion!

I guess if I was losing 1-2 lbs a weeks it I wouldn’t look into all these crazy diets. BF (before 40) I could lose weight. Not a problem I just couldn’t keep it off. I’m not mad that I’m not losing like before. I have made progress and trying to make life long changes. I also want to be healthy ,not just slimmer. This is where the confusion comes in. You got your vegan, raw,gluten-free, clean eating , primal,no grain people, what the heck am I supposed to eat? I’M NOT SAYING ANY OF THESE ARE WRONG!  I’m just puzzled. I thought whole grains were healthy now Dr Mercola says no grains except fruit and veggies. The Health Hound says all fruits and veggies are ok but eat grains only after a work out. I’m a doctor and I’m confused.  The Primal/Paleo sounds like Atkins. Did caveman live long enough to be healthy? The more I look at different diets the more I feel frustrated. I don’t know what works the best for me. It ‘s really trial and error and I have to do what makes sense to me. For now I will increase my veggies, continue to eat my fruit, and choose lean proteins and whole grains. You can’t go wrong with that or can you? I would love to hear what works for you.

Breakfast is Awesome! What do you eat?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It gets me going. It keeps me on track. I’ve always ate breakfast just not a healthy breakfast. I’ve never been one to skip meals. I tell my teenage patients. You need protein and carbs. Not just a donut. I do a whole grain, protein, veggie and or fruit for each main meal of the day. I mix egg white powder in my oatmeal and add honey. See myfitness pal log below. I forgot to add my blueberries. What do you eat? Tell me. Send pictures!!!

Farmers Market

I love it when the farmers market starts! We have the best vegetables near our town. I live in Central California and we grow everything. Beans, almond,fruit. Today I picked up bok choi. I cut it up steam in wok with low sodium chicken broth. I added a little salt and pepper and it’s on. My daughter gave me a thumbs up. I bought fava beans also. I found a great recipe. I will have them for lunch tomorrow. I found a great recipe.
